I always forget how empty that wall behind the couch looks until December rolls around and I’m suddenly staring at it thinking, hmm, this needs something. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a few quick things that make the room feel like Christmas without turning the whole place upside down.

1 | Hanging a Simple Greenery Garland
If a wall feels flat, a loose strand of greenery can make it look put together without much effort.
You can drape it slightly uneven and it still looks nice, kind of like you meant for it to be relaxed.
Tiny adhesive hooks work great here as once the garland is hung over them you can barely see them. (Also perfect if you are in an apartment or renting!)

If your wall is long, you can go with bigger wreaths or add a fourth.
3 | Brown Paper Star Cutouts
If your budget is basically zero, brown paper stars feel kind of charming.
Cut different sizes, tape them up lightly, and let them sit at slightly odd angles.

5 | Ribbon Wall Grid
Stick thin strips of ribbon vertically with tape, then cross two or three horizontally to make a loose grid.
You can clip small ornaments where the ribbons meet. It looks more intentional than it actually is.

They peel off clean in January. So this is an easy win for renters too.
7 | Rustic Stick Star
If you have twigs from the garden, tie five together with thin twine to make a large star.
Hang it with a small nail or a command hook.

12 | Faux Garland Curtain
Drape long, thin strands of tinsel or faux greenery vertically down a wall to mimic a curtain.
This works especially well if your couch is pushed close to the wall.
Let the strands hang at uneven lengths for that casual look.
You can tie on pieces of tinsel individually or save yourself the hassle and buy a tinsel curtain.
13 | Christmas Message Banner
A simple banner looks great on the wall behind couch for Christmas.
Cut simple letters from card or reuse pre-cut ones to make a small banner. Think “Joy” or “Merry” or whatever feels right.
Hang it slightly loose so it curves a bit.
